To open a docx file in an older version of OpenOffice will require converting the file to doc format first, and then using the File > Open menu item in OpenOffice.
#HOW TO MAKE A SUPERSCRIPT IN OPENOFFICE UPGRADE#
Older versions of OpenOffice (prior to version 3.0) did not include support for docx, although Novell produced a version that would but this has since become redundant though it is still available for users who choose not to upgrade to version 3 of OpenOffice. To change the default setings in OpenOffice 3.0 for opening/converting and saving files in either the native odt format, or Microsoft’s docx format, open the settings dialog box and click the Load/Save preferences pane, then click Microsoft Office to select or unselect the default conversion options. User settings in OpenOffice will dictate which option applies.
Saving an open docx from within OpenOffice will either happen automatically or prompt the user to save the file in odt format. Version 3.0 of OpenOffice and derivatives such as NeoOffice happily open and save docx formatted files and will prompt the user to convert the file to the OpenOffice native format. OpenOffice saves word processing documents in a format known as odt (OpenDocument Text), a competing open file format to Microsoft’s docx format. OpenOffice is a free open source alternative to popular office suites such as MS Office and Corel Wordperfect, and is often used in smaller offices or developing nations where the budget for expensive software can’t be found.
